History of Newport News

In the 1600s, English explorers and settlers settled in the regions neighboring to the Hampton Roads. The area of Newport News in 1619 became the part of one of the four large corporations of the Virginia Company of London, and since then, it was referred as Elizabeth Cittie. The English Colony of Virginia in 1634 was divided into eight counties of Virginia. The Newport News was included in the Warwick County. It continued to exist like an independent town in Warwick County for about 250 years. 

One of the major movers & shakers was Collins P. Huntington. He visited Newport News point in 1837. He was the owner of Ohio Railroad and Chesapeake, and one of the builders of first transcontinental railroad in the country. Later, he developed Newport News Shipbuilding Company, which became the largest shipyard in the world.   In 1860s, at the time of American Civil War, several significant events took place in Newport News. In 1896, the city was formally incorporated. In 1958, Newport News and Warwick County joined as one, and became the city of Newport News.

Virginia War Museum: The Virginia War Museum  features the military history of the US from 1775 to the present day through exhibits that include weapons, transportation equipments, cannons, uniforms and other memorabilia. 

U.S. Army Transportation Museum: U.S. Army Transportation Museum features US military logistics features through exhibits that includes horse-drawn wagons, military equipments, steam locomotives, military vehicles and models. 

Endview PlantationEndview Plantation is a seventeenth century plantation with lots of history. It features Civil War history, Colonial history, 19th century medicine and nature trails.

James A. Fields House: Learn about the African American history at the James A. Field House. It features the story of African-American community in the city. 

Newport News Park: Newport News Park features several lakes, natural woodlands, gardens, horses, boat ramp, disc golf and bike rentals. This is a perfect place for camping, biking, horseback riding, boating and other outdoor activities. 

Riverview Farm Park: Riverview Farm Park  features picnic areas, soccer fields, playground, Skate Park and walking trails.  Take a stroll down the walking trails, relax in the open space and enjoy the beauty of nature, or indulge in activities like skating, soccer and other ball games.
